Therapy vs Coaching: What's the Difference?

           Therapy

Focus: Healing past wounds, processing trauma, managing mental health conditions (e.g., anxiety, depression).
Who It’s For: People struggling with emotional distress, mental illness, or unresolved past experiences.
Approach: Deep psychological work, exploring emotions, childhood experiences, and coping mechanisms.
Goal: Emotional healing, symptom reduction, and overall mental well-being.
Regulation: Therapists must be licensed and follow state regulations.

          Coaching

Focus: Goal-setting, mindset shifts, personal growth, and future success.
Who It’s For: Individuals who want to improve their self-worth, relationships, career, or confidence but are not experiencing significant mental health issues.
Approach: Motivational techniques, action plans, and accountability.
Goal: Help clients gain clarity, build confidence, and take action toward a desired outcome.
Regulation: No formal licensing required, though certifications exist.

                                                                                        Disclaimer:

While I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in the state of California, the coaching services I provide are not therapy and do not establish a therapist-client relationship. Coaching is a separate service focused on personal growth, goal-setting, and support for life transitions. These services are not intended to diagnose or treat mental health conditions. Coaching clients must understand that this is not a substitute for psychotherapy, counseling, or other mental health services. If at any point it becomes clear that therapy would better serve your needs, I will provide appropriate referrals. Coaching services are available to clients outside of California, whereas therapy services are only provided to individuals residing in California.
